A LONG awaited pedestrian crossing could be in place by next spring.

Funding for the safe way across Crewe's busy Earle Street was given the green light earlier this year.

Campaigners calling for a former crossing on the old Earle Street route to be replaced celebrated success.

But since then, there has been no action and no further news.

"This is a main route into the town centre and the traffic problems have not eased. There was a crossing before the road was re-routed so that should have justified the provision of a crossing on the new Earle Street. People are beginning to wonder why the work is not going ahead. It is urgently required," said Cllr Ray Stafford.

Head of Engineering David Heyes said that the funds were in place for the crossing in this current financial year.

"It was approved by a local committee on April 26. It will take a little while for the work to be organised because it must not clash with work being carried out by other agencies like the gas, water and electricity companies. Then it has to go out to tender. But work should be completed in this financial year," Mr Heyes added.
