A STRONG Warrington influence was not quite enough to help the Lancashire County Junior Bowls side win the war fo the roses.

A large crowd gathered at St. Oswalds to support the nine local players, who put up a spirited fight against a more experienced South Yorkshire side.

The most notable performances came from Alan Manuel, who won 21-14, Andrew Wightman, 21-16 and Richard Buchanan, 21-19.

Wightman added to his success by finally taking the Lancashire Junior Merit competition at Naylors Sports Club in Golborne.

Laser Quest Youth player Wightman had lost in the last two finals of the tournament but saw off a semi-final challenge from teammate Stephen Lea and defeated Orrel's Matthew Seimmons at the final hurdle.

He will now represent Lancashire in the All-England Junior Merit competition on August 15 in Stoke on Trent, hoping to improve on his runner-up position of last year.
