AMBITIOUS plans to build a giant Asda superstore in Widnes will face opposition from rival food giants.

The Co-op and Morrisons have already lodged objections and are calling for a public inquiry.

The Co-op fears the proposed new store - to be built in Simms Cross - will take customers from their store, round the corner.

The United Norwest Co-op believes there is no need for another food store in the town centre.

"The plans for an Asda superstore are in conflict with the council's own local plan and the advice given by the borough's own consultants," said a Co-op spokesman.

"The Chesterton Retail Issues Study concluded that there was no need for a major food store in Widnes town centre.

"This report confirmed our concerns and we will continue to oppose the proposal at the planning stage, which may result in a public inquiry."
