YOUNG people are working together to improve their lives at the launch of a new community based project.

The scheme is part of the Youth Action initiative which, until now, has only had groups in schools.

But for the first time in Warrington, a project has been created in the community. Two rooms at the Fairfield Community House in Manchester Road have been set aside and a team of volunteers are busy decorating in preparation for a grand opening next month. Older teenagers from an existing group are offering help and advice to the new recruits.

"We want to see young people as role models for other young people," said Youth Action's chairman Dave Betts.

"And I am so impressed with the excellent job that is being done here."

Previous Youth Action ventures have included drug education, the building of environmental areas and anti-bullying initiatives and the Fairfield youngsters want to carry on the good work.

Julie Stuttard, aged 13, said: "There's nothing to do around here so I think the group is a really good idea."

Scott Emery, aged 18, added: "The project will be serious to a point, with information available about drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and what's happening in the area, but it will also be a place to meet with a games room and TV room.

"This area has a lot of problems so it's about time something was set up here."
