TRADING Standards officers in Cheshire are warning residents to beware of unexpected callers offering to resurface their driveway.

It follows a number of complaints about traders who say they can undertake the work using asphalt, which they claim has been 'left over' from previous contracts.

Community development committee chairman Larry Toale said: "Some people have agreed to have the work done and found it to be expensive and of a poor quality.

"One consumer who said 'no' returned home to find a badly resurfaced drive and a huge bill. This is something which local residents need to be aware of, and of course in the past there have been instances of abuse and aggression if payment was not forthcoming."

Cheshire's Trading Standards Officer Neil Pardoe is advising people not to agree to have work carried out by unexpected callers at the front door.

He added "The chances are you will receive poor quality workmanship for a high price. If you are considering having work done, you should obtain several quotes from reputable firms. Once consumers have paid these traders it is difficult, if not impossible to obtain a refund."
