MIDDLEWICH residents have blasted Congleton Borough Council for not dealing swiftly with traffic problems in the town.
At a meeting with the Joint Highways Committee, Clr John Brown told the committee a report by the County Highways Consultants showed the A533 at Lewin Street and Booth Lane has an accident rate of almost twice the national average.
The solution is the uncompleted feeder road known as the Middlewich Eastern Relief Road.
Clr Brown said: "Until complete, we should call this road the Middlewich Eastern Cul-de-sac because it currently does nothing to alleviate town centre congestion.
"I live in dread of a child or multiple fatality involving a heavy goods vehicle and a family ."
The traffic situation will worsen when the new ERF factory opens and this has prompted 472 residents to petition the council about lack of effective action in alleviating the traffic congestion on the A533 (Lewin St./Booth Lane) Middlewich.
"Our elected councillors and the relevant authorities should take all reasonable and necessary steps to ensure full and early completion of the new road," the petition says.
