A NEW community centre for people in the Valley Ward of Crewe has been opened by the mayor, Chris Thorley.

Based at the All Saints church in Stewart Street, the centre will look to help local residents with advice as well as considering grant applications from community groups for new equipment and facilities.

Help for the unemployed will also be offered to improve job seeking skills with courses running at the centre to give training in areas such as information technology and child minding.

People with ideas to improve aspects of the area like parking problems and disturbances, can contact the community development worker, Lesley Hughes, who will be able to help and explain exactly which channels to direct their grievances through.

Anyone looking to start a community group, wanting help for an established one or information about which groups operate in the area is welcome to contact the centre.

It will be open two afternoons a week, on Mondays and Tuesdays, between 12.30pm and 3.30pm, but it is hoped that hours could increase if the centre is successful in recruiting more volunteers to assist in its operation.

All successful applicants will receive full training at South Cheshire College in preparation for their role at the centre.

To volunteer or for more information contact Lesley on 01270 650519.
