SOUTH Cheshire Friends of the Earth is calling on Cheshire County Council to invest in a continuous cycle route between Nantwich and Crewe.

The environmental group believe that with the borough being one of the fastest growing in the area, particularly with the amount of housing growth in Nantwich, roads will be gridlocked for most of the day.

Campaigners are calling for more investment into cycle ways between the two towns.

They also claim that as the county council's provisional local transport plan suggests upgrades to the A534 this would be the ideal opportunity to invest.

"The road is already heavily used by cyclists and safer conditions would promote further cycling and hopefully reduce the almost inevitable growth in car usage between Crewe and Nantwich," said FoE campaigner Jonathan Tilt.

"Crewe and Nantwich have historically high levels of cycle usage with the distance between the two towns being well suited to cycling, but in recent years the provision for cyclists has fallen behind other towns.

"It is time this was corrected and that cycling was given the investment it deserves.

"Cyclists should be provided with dedicated road space and priority at junctions. Solutions such as these can encourage cycling and reduce our dependance on cars producing wide ranging benefits for the individual and the community."
