A WINSFORD man has scaled the largest mountain in the United Kingdom in aid of the Cancer Research Campaign.
Noel Stewart, of Bradbury Road, undertook the sponsored climb of Ben Nevis as a thank you for the help he received when he was diagnosed with cancer a year ago.
Noel suffered bowel cancer and had emergency surgery in August 1998.
And he decided to raise money for the charity by climbing Ben Nevis only a year after his recovery. He began the 4,406ft climb at 7am and it took him 8 hours and 50 minutes to complete.
Noel said: "After the treatment I received I felt as though I wanted to give something back. I thought if I could raise just £200 I would be happy that I had helped."
In fact, with sponsorship from friends, family and Noel's employer, Linpack, he raised a total of £1,700.
"It's all thanks to the people who sponsored me. Without them it's nothing," Noel added.
