CONGLETON'S hopes of emulating last season's run in the Tetley Bitter Vase ended on Saturday with a second round 26-7 defeat at Halton.
Congleton took an early lead against their opponents, who play in a division below Congleton, when skipper Mark Winship scored a converted try in the opening five minutes.
However Halton replied with a 10-minute period of intense pressure, which led to a soft converted try under the posts.
Halton had an easy run in for their second converted try, and from the restart kicked a penalty.
The game was effectively all over after 25 minutes after Halton scored two more tries in quick succession, and after were content to defend their lead.
Congleton 2nd XV won 24-7 at Sandbach, who beat Congleton's 3rd team 42-14, while the 4th XV went down 13-10 at home to Linley.
