PROTESTING local farmers have won their fight to stop a French Market being held in the borough.

The market had been arranged for November 11, 12 and 13 as the launch to Christmas shopping in Crewe.

But farmers across the area were angry at the decision to hold the market while France refused to import British beef.

As a result of their protests the borough council has decided to postpone the event and it has been suggested that a one day market could be run by local farmers in its place.

Leader of the council, Peter Kent, said: "It is clear that feelings among farmers are running high locally.

"They know that postponing the market can be no more than a gesture, but they are looking at support from all quarters at the moment.

"It may be some time before the French comply with European Union Law and call off their beef ban.

"I think it would be a wonderful gesture if local farmers could run at least a one day market in Crewe in place of the French.

"That in itself could boost trade and be an active way of saying thank you for the support given I have asked the council's chief executive to make approach to the National Farmers Union. I hope they will give a positive response."

He added that public safety and well-being were the council's top priority and the council had also been concerned that customers or people marking Armistice Day could be discouraged by the prospect of protests.

NFU local secretary Peter Offer said: "Obviously we are pleased that it has been called off as we feel it is a totally inappropriate time to do it.

"We were disappointed that they thought of it in the first place, I understand that it was planned some time ago but they should have been aware, as the time came nearer, of what events were regarding France taking our beef.

"We shouldn't have had to put pressure on they should have realised themselves and I would like to think that they would put some effort into promoting our own farmers.

"But it was a very speedy response and if we can work with the council to promote our products then something good could come out of it."
