According to Knutsford's millennium calendar, the lawn on Toft Road opposite the Post Office is Memorial Gardens.
But residents do not know what the garden is in memory of.
Fred McDowell, who took the photograph, said he was not aware the garden had a name.
"The first time I heard anything about it was when the calendar was printed and I saw the name next to it," he said.
And Amy Clowes, 86, of Albert Street, said she had walked by the garden 'thousands of times' but had never seen anything to indicate it was a memorial.
"I have lived in Knutsforsd all my life," she said. "I have never seen a plaque and I would like to know who it is a memorial of because I can't remember."
But Clr Jennifer Holbrook, chairman of Knutsford Town Council's environment committee, said she had been told it was in memory of a young person who served in a world war.
"Lots of people know about the memorial," she said. "But there is nowhere to put a plaque at the moment."
