THE result wasn't right for muscle man John Blackburn, but the experience of taking on the world's best in Sun City, South Africa, was worth its weight in gold.
The Wincham lifter was disappointed to miss out on a medal when he competed in the World Masters Power Lifting Championship at the weekend.
John, aged 42, finished seventh in a heavyweight field which included medal winners from Ukraine, Sweden and America in the 125 kilos class.
He went for bust when he tried to break his record of 325 kilos and admits the gamble cost him.
"I wanted to get a medal and pushed hard," said John. "I went for some bigger weights and if I had got them I would have been near the top. But I finished, which is pleasing.
"It was a great experience, the facilities were marvellous and the venue was a real eye-opener. The travelling was hard with a 10-hour flight then a three-hour bus ride at the other end, but I arrived on Monday and didn't lift until the Saturday.
"I was nervous, but it's good to have a bit of nerves because they can help you."
John goes back to Dave's Gym in Northwich next week to begin preparation for next year, when he hopes to retain his British title and travel to more foreign shores.
He said: "I've got to put a good show in at the British Championships again in April to get through to next year's world event in Russia."
