GIANT puppets help recreate the story of George and the dragon this Saturday at a novel bonfire party in Rode Heath.

The puppets have been created by local schoolchildren, and will feature in a short play written for the occasion by Terry Rowley.

The drama of George and his mortal enemy is to be acted out at the annual bonfire and firework celebrations, being held next to the Broughton Arms.

Children play the roles of knights and maidens in the play, which is due to be performed in the shadow of a bonfire created in the style of a medieval castle to add to the atmosphere.

The show will also feature the Samba Blox group from Crewe, and members of Alsager Community Theatre, and the 20-minute play is due to start at 7.30pm.

"The children have made head-dresses, daggers, shields, flags and pennants for the play, and helped to create the giant puppets at a series of workshops," said Maria Boone, one of the show's organisers.

"There will be about 20 children in the play, and the voices will be provided by members of the community theatre."

The evening is costing about £3,000 to stage, and tickets, priced at £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children, are available at local shops and pubs.

Tickets on the night are 50p dearer.
