OUI, oui, oui! The borough council was right to cancel its French Market!

That's the opinion of every reader who has responded to our request for comments last week.

Some of the responses were angry and very anti-French anything.

For a couple of old soldiers with memories of the D-Day landings the French attitude towards British beef is particularly galling!

"They were glad we were there in 1940. The present situation is just disgusting," said Albert Killiner of Crewe.

Most of our respondents said they were not buying French produce and were checking supermarket tins and packets carefully to find out where the ingredients came from.

Eric Johnson of Nantwich "wholeheartedly" agrees with stopping the market.

"It's taught me to read labels. Last week I bought a brand of sweetcorn I had purchased many times before. But when I looked at the label I found it was a produce of France. Now I intend to check before I buy," he said.

"I've always eaten beef but my meat comes from a local farm. I won't be touching anything from France," he added.

Mr and Mrs Nicholson from Nantwich also urged people not to buy products from France and called on the borough council to end any twinning arrangements with the French.

Mr P J Harrison of Wistaston claimed that even contemplating holding a French Market was the "height of insensitity".

Throughout all of our replies ran a "support our own farmers" theme.

Earlier this week, with news that French farmers were feeding their livestock sewage, a Cheshire NFU spokesman called for a ban on French meat products. But the Government has ruled that out, claiming scientists have declared there is no health risk.
