WHARTON Cons bowler Alan Robinson pulled off a shock result to record his biggest ever win on Sunday.
Robinson, of Tarn Close, Winsford, picked up the £1,000 first prize for landing the 2000 Kingston Communications Classic at the Tetley Walker Club, Warrington.
Robinson, a 20-1 outsider before the event, won the day in a thrilling final against Graham Dulson of Wem.
He was 8-5 down before winning 10 points in a row to lead 15-8. He extended this to 20-11 before staving off a late comeback to secure a winning margin of 21-15.
However, Robinson claimed his biggest scalp of the evening in the last 16 when he took on hot 7-2 favourite Glyn Cookson in an all-Wharton Cons tie.
The underdog produced an inspired display of crown green bowling to oust the former national champion 21-11.
In the quarter-finals, Robinson had to play two very good pressure bowls to stay in the game against Roy Goodhand of Warrington, who was leading 20-18, before clinching the winning point.
In this round, Dulson also scraped through 21-20, against Brian Tomlinson of Blackburn.
Both finalists had an easier time in the semi-finals, Robinson going through 21-15 against Derby's Ian Daley, and Dulson by the same score against Peter Williams of West Bromwich.
