THERE are many people now wondering what all the fuss is about regarding what is being called the millennium.

There is no doubt that the year 2000 is the last year of the present millennium, but if we are to believe the newspapers in general, and of course radio and television, we must celebrate the end of the second millennium, and the start of the new at the end of 1999.

Councillor Mannion, of Vale Royal Borough Council, has made comment about a lack of enthusiasm - reflected in the lack of people and organisations arranging public millennium events.

So, what is the real truth about this rather strange situation?

There is no doubt that if the government, television, newspapers and of course hotels and business in general keep telling us that it really is the beginning of a new century and the third millennium, we will believe it.

Some people are calling it the scam of the present millennium.

Meanwhile, most people I have talked to are celebrating Christmas and new year at the end of this year in the usual way - friends and family, home parties. Next year will be a time for most of us to remember the happenings of the second millennium, especially the 20th Century which has arguably been the most momentous in history.
