WITTON Albion are hoping to raid their nearest UniBond Division One rivals by securing the services of Tony Carroll.

The Radcliffe Borough striker has been made available by the club, who lie second behind Albion, as they struggle to meet financial constraints.

However, Witton's own financial issues may block the deal going through as competition for the renowned goalscorer is set to be fierce.

Albion manager Nigel Gleghorn said: "We've had a look at him and I've spoken to their manager so we'll have to speak to the player to find out what he wants.

"But it's the club that counts and we won't be spending money we haven't got."

As well as looking to strengthen his squad, Gleghorn has proved in the last week that he is not afraid to juggle it around.

Physio Steve Crompton has taken over in goal for the last two matches, while Phil McGing has been given a rest.

Gleghorn said: "I didn't want Phil losing confidence after a couple of errors so I gave him a little break to get him back on top of his game.

"He's only a young lad and I believe he will be a very good keeper. I've told him he's not out of my plans and he has to knuckle down and earn his place."

Albion are three points clear of Radcliffe after their 3-2 victory over Ossett Town on Saturday, which followed a midweek 1-1 draw at Trafford.

This Saturday, Witton face a testing trip to Matlock Town in UniBond Division One (3pm).
