Witton Albion 3
Ossett Town 2
UniBond Division One
Saturday, October 30
A HOME win and a three-point lead at the top of the table isn't a bad thing when you've just turned in your worst performance of the season.
That was the verdict of manager Nigel Gleghorn, whose goals again provided the platform for Witton's victory.
He said: "We took our foot off the pedal. I'm happy with the result but not the performance, it was our worst of the season."
Aside from the first few minutes of each half, there wasn't much for Albion fans to shout about as they welcomed Ossett to Wincham Park for the first time.
The first goal arrived after just two minutes when visiting keeper Jonathan Scargill flapped in the wind at a Lee Anderson cross and Danny Graystone, in his first start in the red and white, scored.
The lead was extended on five minutes when David Anane took advantage of Simon Fuller's dithering to cross for Gleghorn to drill home.
Ossett's first real attack came on 25 minutes. A Scott Jackson cross was tipped away by Steve Crompton as Simon Woodhead closed in.
Ten minutes later Charlie Boyd chipped the ball on for Graystone, whose header was parried by Scargill, and Carter missed with the rebound.
On 37 minutes, Witton benefited from a controversial decision when Danny Gee was fortunate to stay on the field, tripping Jackson and escaping with a yellow card.
Immediately after the restart, Witton won a free-kick and Gleghorn summed up his current confidence by firing it into the net to make it 3-0.
The visitors pulled one back two minutes later when a cross from the left was headed past Crompton by Scott Jackson.
In the 59th minute Albion had a perfect chance to go 4-1 up but sub Paul Hennin managed to scoop the ball off the toes of Eddie Bishop when the assistant manager appeared to have a good chance.
Seven minutes from time, Noel Horner, himself lucky to still be on the field, headed in a corner from Fuller, and Albion then had to fend off a series of corners and goalmouth scrambles before taking the three points.
Witton: Crompton, Anderson (Bishop, 45 mins), West (Hennin, 52 mins), Pritchard, Gee, Carter, Gleghorn, Boyd, Cox, Graystone, Anane.
