GIRLS are being called to the crease in an attempt to make Cheshire an even more potent cricket force.

Only Lancashire and Yorkshire finished above the county's junior girls in the 1999 season, which was only their second in a competitive league.

Last Tuesday, the cream of the county's youngsters celebrated a successful year at Barnton Cricket Club.

Junior organiser Dave Addison said: "We're trying to get girls' cricket going in Cheshire so we can compete a lot better.

"We finished third in only our second season so we were quite pleased with that."

Two players from Oakmere have made a particular impact this year.

Charlotte Tomlinson won the under-15s batting award, for the highest individual score of the league season, 83, against Irish side Leinster during their summer tour.

Hayley Agnew, captain of the under-17s team, took the bowling award for her figures of 3-20 in a tournament in Peterborough.

Both Charlotte and Hayley have played for the county under-21 sides, while Hayley has represented the senior Cheshire team.

Girls from all over the county have been playing home matches at Barnton throughout the summer and the village will continue to be their home next year.

Dave Addison complimented Northwich on its contribution to the county cricket scene.

He added: "Barnton hosted all the home matches bar one and we're very happy with the support we had. It's difficult to get grounds to play on but they were very helpful."

The recruitment drive for female cricketers is running throughout the winter at Moss Farm. Anyone interested in being involved can contact Cheshire County Youth Cricket's Peter Hancock on 01606 871812.
