Inspector John Barnes confirmed this week that chevron signs would be introduced to warn motorists about driving too close to other cars.
Speed checks and a 30-minute rule for the removal of broken down vehicles have also been introduced on the motorway between Knutsford and Holmes Chapel.
"A lot of the accidents we have are speed related, but not through excessive speed, just drivers going too fast for the conditions," said Insp Barnes.
The Knutsford stretch of the motorway will be the first in the North West to be fitted with chevron signs.
More than 90,000 vehicles pass Knutsford's M6 services every day. A third are HGVs.
Yesterday (Tuesday) Insp Barnes said traffic lights introduced at the Tabley roundabout had reduced the number of incidents at the interchange.
"We can try these things to save lives, but if it doesn't work we haven't lost anything," he said.
