Sheffield Hawks 10

Crosfields 20

CROSFIELDS came out on top in this hard fought National Conference Division Two match at Sheffield's Arena Stadium.

The first points were scored in the 15th minute when scrum half David Gibbons converted a penalty for holding down.

On 35 minutes, after some end to end play, full back Russ Parkman finished off a set move on the last tackle to score near the posts. Gibbons converted.

Right on half-time Gibbons converted another penalty for a high tackle to make the score 10-0.

With both defences giving no quarter it was not until 15 minutes from full time that the next try was scored by Sheffield loose forward Phil Hough.

Straight from the kick-off Hawks knocked on and from the resulting scrum loose forward Peter Canon picked up the spilled ball and pulled off a nice side step to score. Gibbons converted to make the scoreline 16-4 to Crosfields.

Sheffield's prop Andy Thompson slipped through some poor Soap tackling to score and stand off Jason Davidson converted to reduce the arrears to six points.

Terry Reid decided to send on veteran Dougie Johnson to calm things down for the last five minutes and with his first pass of the season he threw the ball out wide for winger Paul Caswell to score in the corner to make the final score 20-10 to Crosfields for a well-earned victory.

Man of the match went to Neil Brough, who was closely followed in the forwards by Barrie Lowe and Peter Cannon, while at half back the pairing of Eddie Bannon and Gibbons again proved successful.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Crosfields are at home against York Acorn, kick-off 2pm.
