WORK has finally begun on Warrington's multi-million pound arts centre.
Builders have this week moved into the Old Court House, on Winmarleigh Street, to convert the grade two listed building into Pyramid - Warrington's first dedicated arts centre. Situated near the art gallery, museum, library and Parr Hall, it will complete the town's cultural quarter.
Clr Mike Hannon, deputy leader of the council, said: "It is the long, long awaited start and it is extremely exciting. The arts centre is the start of our cultural quarter and with pedestrianisation and the new gardens the area will be totally transformed within two years."
He hit back at claims that the centre will be bad for existing businesses in the area.
"It will encourage regeneration in the area and maybe in the long term we will see craft shops and coffee houses spring up."
Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the borough council, said: "It will be a beacon for the area and encourage investment in the town centre."
The work, by Horrocks Construction, is expected to be completed in 18 months.
Andy Ashley, the company's regional manager, is looking forward to the challenge. He said: "We are delighted to be associated with this prestigious scheme and are looking forward to working with Warrington Borough Council."
