POLICE are hunting two men after a robbery at a building society in Middlewich.

The drama unfolded late on Friday afternoon when the robbers burst into the Cheshire Building Society on Wheelock Street.

They jumped over the counter and threatened staff who handed over what police describe as a "substantial quantity of cash."

No-one was hurt, but staff members were left shaken by the ordeal.

The first robber is described as a white male, 18 or 19 years old, 5ft 6 and with a very poor skin complexion. He had mousy, wavy hair and was wearing a cream jacket with black flashes on the collar.

The second man was also a white male, 20 to 25 years, 5ft 8 with a Liverpool accent. He was wearing a blue/green jacket and jeans, and both men wore baseball caps.

Police believe the men ran from the scene to a getaway car, a light coloured saloon, parked in Somerfield car park. This is one of the areas in Middlewich to benefit from CCTV cameras which police are now studying.

Detective Sergeant Phil Bowyer said: "We would appeal to any witnesses to this crime to come forward with any information they may have."
