WITTON Albion player-manager Nigel Gleghorn is hoping to add two former Northwich Vics players to his squad before the UniBond One opener against North Ferriby United a week on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Dean Greygoose has turned out in Albion's recent pre-season friendlies, while left-back Mark Sims has been given the go-ahead by his current club Chorley to start negotiations with Witton with a view to a transfer.

The addition of Greygoose and Sims to the Albion squad would be a welcome boost for Gleghorn, who is already in an upbeat mood following some useful pre-season displays from his men.

On Tuesday last week, Witton travelled to Flixton, where they secured a 2-2 draw thanks to a first-half goal from Richard Carter and a thundering free-kick from striker Mike Turner.

There then followed a hectic run of three friendlies in four days at Wincham Park, starting with Friday's 2-1 defeat by Leek Town - Paul Hennin netting a late consolation goal for an under-strength Albion side.

On Saturday, Stalybridge Celtic were the visitors and Albion triumphed 2-0 in a physical encounter. David Anane gave Witton the lead after 34 minutes and Turner's powerful near-post shot just before half-time settled matters.

Then on Monday evening, Albion were winners again, putting in a fine performance to beat Stoke City Reserves 1-0, with former Stoke player Gleghorn grabbing the winner after 30 minutes.

Witton are back in action on Friday evening, when Great Harwood Town visit Wincham Park for Albion's final pre-season friendly (7.30pm).
