Altrincham-based site owner Pozzoni Design Group has submitted outline plans to Macclesfield Borough Council to flatten the former St Vincent's School in Queen Street and build homes.

The plans are due to be discussed by councillors on September 6.

If approved, a second, more detailed plan of the development proposals would be expected.

The building, thought to have been built around 1880, was originally St Vincent's School.

The all-age school catered for children from five to 14 , with two classrooms - one for infants, the other for juniors.

It was given to the Catholic church when the school moved to new premises on Manor Park South.

"It hasn't been used much recently," said local historian Joan Leach, who attended the school when she was seven. "It is not particularly attractive and it is a bit run down now.

"I don't think it's an important piece of Knutsford's heritage, but it does show how desirable every bit of land is these days."

A spokesman for Pozzoni was unavailable for comment yesterday.

But Ernie Buckley, who is involved in property management, said: "Any property Knutsford is desirable - and Queen Street is very handy for the town centre."
