WIDNES football outfit, Avon Athletic, are all set to start their 36th season since formation in 1965.

Members of the South Wirral Premier League, their ultimate goal is promotion into the much heralded West Cheshire League and a top two finish in the forthcoming season would give them an opportunity to make the progression, whilst still retaining their South Wirral League membership.

First team manager Dave Pierce comments: "We have enjoyed a tremendous relationship with the SWL, and will always maintain that affiliation and having reached two semi finals and finishing fourth in the last season, our sights are set high for this year.

Training has started on Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm and any players looking for a challenge in the forthcoming season are welcome to attend."

With several new signings, excellent sponsorships, two new kits, and the newly refurbished social club of our hosts, Widnes St Maries ARLFC, the future looks very exciting.

Dave concludes: "The team came very close last year, and I am confident that with our new players adding to the squad of last year, we will be collecting some silverware by the end of the season."

The season kicks off on Saturday, August 19 with a home game against Hope Farm Youth, kick-off 3pm.
