PLANS to create a new retail and leisure development at the north end of Widnes town centre have been welcomed by residents and traders.

Feedback to the proposals in Albert Road will be discussed at a special executive board meeting of Halton Council tomorrow. (Thursday)

Most people who responded to the consultation believe the refurbishment will create many new jobs and boost flagging trade.

Cllr Rob Polhill, executive board member for planning and transportation, said: "The response has been quite positive.

"Hopefully, if this gets the go-ahead, it will put an end to a lot of uncertainty for people up there. We have met with traders and their biggest concern is not knowing what is happening.

"I have tried to progress this so they at least know, once this is passed, we should have a timetable so they can make plans themselves."

The proposals include building a new road to link Peelhouse Lane with the ring road round the market. The plans include altering traffic flow, restricting vehicle access and increasing parking and pedestrianisation.

It is hoped that four or five large non-food units will be built to attract leading High Street names.

Developers St Modwen are confident they will be able to attract well-known companies.
