THE funeral of former mayor Allen Inett was held this week.

Civic leaders joined councillors, magistrates, teachers, ex servicemen and women, parishioners and representatives of community groups to pay their respects.

Halton's Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Julie Devaney and Mrs Kath Loftus attended his funeral at St John The Evangelist Church on Tuesday, officiated by Rev Alan Taylor.

Father-of-four Mr Inett, 72, of Sandy Lane, 72, was a councillor for more than 30 years, representing residents in Weston and Mersey wards.

Fellow Cllr Reg Eastup said Mr Inett was a quiet, unassuming man who worked diligently for the local community.

He said: "He was a chap you could always depend on to get things done. He was not one of these who made great speeches but he was very steady."

Mr Inett first became a councillor in 1963 as a member of Runcorn Urban District Council and went on to serve the community during five terms of office until 1992.

He was Mayor between 1988 and 1989.

Weston-born Mr Inett was a magistrate and chair of governors at Weston primary school and The Heath.

He worked for ICI Rocksavage as a process worker for 37 years and was involved with the British Legion.

He was very active in his own local community, helping with the 1st Weston & Weston Point scouts, St Johns church Tuesday club and Age Concern.

His daughter described him this week as "a family man". She said: "He was very proud of all his children."

Mr Inett leaves his wife, Elizabeth, three daughters, a son, 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

His widow requested family flowers only with donations to Age Concern.
