WORK has started on a new £5m technical centre at Crosfield.
It will become the company's main laboratory for new product and process development and quality control.
Site manager Dr John Davies said: "The new laboratory will be situated next to the existing main office in Liverpool Road, and will feature the latest designs for laboratory operations. It represents a major investment in Crosfield's technical capabilities for the future."
About 100 staff will move from the old technical centre on the Crosfield site. Mr Davies said the old centre, built in the l950s, no longer met the needs of a modern, leading edge, technical business.
It will be demolished once the new centre is operative.
Work at the moment is at the foundation stage. The centre is expected to be open by the summer of next year.
The project involves several companies from the north west area, with the main contractors being Moss Northern of Manchester. Philip Dunbaven Associates of Warrington are providing accoustic engineering support.
Crosfield is part of ICI.
