WOLVES back rower Steve McCurrie is on his way to achieving what no Warrington forward has managed for 15 years.

McCurrie's two tries against Salford City Reds at Wilderspool on Sunday left him joint second in the club's try-scoring stakes for the season.

His total of 14, helped by five tries in the last five matches, is only one behind leader Lee Penny, the Wolves full back.

No forward has topped the club's try scoring chart in one season since Bob Eccles did it in 1984/85 season?

Eccles told the GUARDIAN he would be delighted if McCurrie achieved the milestone.

He said: "I rate Steve as a player and I hope he does it. If he gets a spurt on he might catch my total of 37 from season 1982/83 - but I hope he only makes it to 36!"

With only six games to go until the end of the season that is almost impossible but McCurrie said: "It is a long time since a forward topped the try scoring chart at Warrington and I wouldn't mind finishing top this year because it would prove a few people wrong."

McCurrie's 14 touch downs so far is his best tally in any one season, beating his 12 in Widnes' 1994/95 and 1995/96 campaigns.

However, McCurrie's focus remains on helping his team to win their remaining games this season.

He said: "Hull will be a tough match this weekend. They are still pushing for the top five but we have a point to prove against them because they came to Wilderspool earlier in the year and gave us a real drubbing.

"We want to carry on our roll and finish the season off well."

McCurrie, like many of the Wolves players of late, has been carrying injuries into games.

He said: "I have a bad shoulder and knee but that is just part of the game. You just have to play as long as you can with them."

Warrington's Allan Langer and Andrew Gee are having their own try-scoring battle. Gee has a theory from their Brisbane Broncos days together that one of his tries is worth three of Alf's and by his reckoning it means his third try of the season against Salford has put him 9-8 ahead.

Gee, not known for his try-scoring prowess, was heard to say at training this week: "If I score another try next week I'll be on fire!"
