MIDDLEWICH moved to within three points of the safety zone with a vital win at bottom side Ashton-on-Mersey on Saturday.

Although it was only their second win of the season, the maximum 25 points couldn't have come at a better time as it almost certainly relegates their opponents to the Meller Braggins League, and puts pressure on Mobberley and Hale Barns, who both lost.

Ashton got off to a good start and reached 41-0 before James Hignett, promoted from the third team, joined the attack.

He dismissed the dangerous Roscow for 18, then proceeded to bowl one of the finest spells Middlewich has seen this season.

Dave Parry backed him up well at the other end and between them they restricted Ashton to 132 all out. Hignett finished with 3-34, Parry 2-22.

Parry then played a captain's innings of 48 before going with the score on 84, and Middlewich still with some work to do to reach their victory target.

This was left to the in-form Andrew Tutt, who despatched Ashton's opening bowler to all corners of the ground, including a glorious cover drive for the winning runs in his unbeaten 32.

Middlewich are at home to Timperley on Saturday (1pm), all support welcome.

MIDDLEWICH 2nds also beat opponents from Ashton-on-Mersey, who they dismissed for just 114 off 54 overs.

Howard Lehepuu was the top wicket taker with 5-33, allowing Middlewich to knock off the runs in just 32 overs.

Anthony Bates hit 33, Steve Williams 21 and Kenny Craig finished unbeaten on 38.
