A BRAVE postmaster tackled two masked robbers, armed with a sawn-off shotgun, who struck at his post office.

Bob Perry was sitting in his kitchen with his wife when the robbers burst into Leftwich Green Post Office, London Road, Northwich, at 10pm, last Thursday.

One of the men was weilding a shotgun - but the postmaster lunged at him and a struggle broke out.

The second man fled, before the armed man hit Mr Perry over the head and escaped.

The postmaster suffered minor head injuries in the attack.

The only description of the two men is that they are in their 20s.

The crime could be connected with an after-hours gang, which has been targeting premises at night.

But police are not ruling anything out.

Detective Inspector Eddie Smith said: "The only thing that we can do is keep an open mind. Unless there is something substantial to connect the crimes, we cannot link them."

He added: "At the moment we have numerous leads and we are doing the usual house to house enquiries.

"But we are appealing to the public who should contact us about anything suspicious in the area at the time, or indeed in the days before the incident."

Anyone with any information can ring Karen Snasdell at Northwich CID on 01244 613235.
