They are angry that their comments about the extension in Mead Close were never sought.

"It is diabolical that an extension of this size has been approved by a delegated authority," said Clr Bert Grange last week.

"The town council did not even see the plans before they were accepted."

Most of the lawn will disappear under the two-storey extension and the front garden will become an extra parking space.

Last week neighbours accused the decision-makers of ignoring their complaints.

"I am very upset that the plans have been passed," said one neighbour. "A five-bedroomed house will not suit this road."

But on Friday Macclesfield's chief planning officer Peter Yates said neighbours' complaints had been considered.

He added that the proposals had met standards set by borough councillors.

"We had no choice but to pass the application," he said.

On Monday Knutsford borough councillor Val Young said she had put forward the residents' case.
