Forensic experts spent several hours gathering evidence after Monday's blaze at Ciao Italia in Malt Street.

Yesterday firemen were refusing to rule out arson.

"We are liaising closely with the police on this matter," said fire investigator John Bowman.

"We are keeping an open mind and are not ruling out any possible causes at the moment."

The area was cordoned off for much of Monday while a forensic team took samples from the building off King Street.

"The investigation may take sometime because we have to wait for the results of various forensic tests," said Mr Bowman.

Three fire engines were called to the scene at 3am to find smoke pouring from an upstairs window.

"It is only due to the experience and professionalism of the fire crews that it was contained to the first floor," said Knutsford Station Officer Loweth.

For two hours firemen fought to control the blaze which destroyed the restaurant kitchen and store areas.

Yesterday the restaurant was closed until further notice.

"I doubt it will open for some time due to the amount of structural damage caused by the fire," said Mr Bowman.

No-one from the restaurant was available for comment.
