INNOVATIVE firefighter Keith Newnes has become a Deputy Chief Fire Officer of Cheshire Fire Brigade after 33 years of service.

Keith, who lives in Widnes, will take on the role in the Service Support section.

His career began in 1967 at Lancashire Fire Brigade. He progressed through the ranks which included being station officer at Warrington and station commander at Stockton Heath in the 1980s.

During his career he has been responsible for some major developments such as helping Cheshire Fire Brigade gain one of the first 'Investor in People' awards.

He also negotiated a 'total care package' for breathing apparatus sets and a state of the art warning device called 'Bodyguard' for Cheshire's 800 firefighters.

He is married to Val and has two children, Stuart and Claire.

Keith said: "I am obviously delighted with my recent appointment. I hope that my experience and knowledge, which has been gained in service to the Cheshire community over many years, will have a real impact on this new and challenging role."

Keith is also committed to the Prince's Trust Volunteer programme and the fire cadet schemes running at stations throughout Cheshire.
