POLICE are clamping down on Summer drinkers.

They are urging local motorists to think before they get behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming alcohol and to make alternative travel arrangements.

The force has already started random stop checks on major roads throughout the county. These will continue until the end of September.

"Anti drink campaigns are normally associated with the Christmas holidays. But it is actually more common during the summer months for drivers to be tempted to drink and then drive." said a spokesman.

"Hot weather, out-door parties and barbecues encourage prolonged periods of drinking with alcohol being consumed over longer periods of time," he added.

Having 'one for the road' can lead to a conviction, up to six months in prison, a fine of up to £5,000 and a 12 month ban from driving.
