WHILST walking along Winwick Street I noticed the development of the new Wickes DIY Store, which is bounded by Winwick Street, Haydock Street, Lythgoes Lane and Pinners Brow.

Did we need another DIY store in the town centre? There is one about a mile away, in Milner Street and two or three miles up Winwick Road there is another huge DIY superstore. This development only benefits Wickes and its shareholders, and in no way do the people of Warrington get any benefit from it, apart from a few jobs.

I hope that the planners of this Borough apply the same planning criteria to the proposed development of The People's Stadium/Tesco Development as they did over the Wickes' plans. Having said that, the elected representatives of the people of this Borough made the final decision on the plans.

The planning committee meets on Wednesday, August 23 at 6.30pm, to discuss the planning application for The People's Stadium/Tesco Development.

I do realise that Tesco are helping Warrington Wolves for their own reasons, but they are also offering this town more jobs and a great sporting and entertainment facility, a chance of a lifetime.

Planners only make recommendations; our elected councillors have the final say, so come on councillors, do something for the benefit of Warrington as a whole, and approve these plans for The People's Stadium.
