VILLAGERS in Lymm stepped back in time on Monday to celebrate the first Rushbearing procession of the Millennium.
Thelwall Morris dancers and rushbearers from Lymm were joined by more than 100 villagers when they re-enacted the traditional gathering of the rushes, a ceremony which dates back to medieval times.
Town Crier Peter Powell and Warrington's Mayor, Clr Sheila Woodyatt, led the procession through the village to St Mary's Church.
Following the Rushbearing, Thelwall Morris dancers led revellers to the village hall to perform the Lymm dance.
Christopher Limb, who organises the festival, said he was delighted with this year's event. "Fortunately the rain held off and well over 100 villagers came out on the streets. We were very pleased with the turnout."
