P'LICE in Northwich are hunting a gang of thugs who viciously attacked a 51-year-old man on his doorstep.

The incident happened at 11pm on Sunday, August 13 at the mans home in Fairfield Road on the Leftwich Estate.

The victim, who does not want to be named, had just got into bed when he heard a knock at the door and went back downstairs to see who was there.

But as he opened the door he was confronted by four men and was immediately punched in the face by one and kicked in the stomach by another, before they escaped in the direction of Richmond Drive.

As a result of the attack the man had to be taken to Leighton Hospital where he was treated for a swollen lip and a severe cut to his arm.

DC John Cookson, who is leading the investigation said: This was a vicious and totally unprovoked attack.

The mans home has been invaded by four very violent men and we cannot allow this kind of practice to continue.

The offender who punched the victim in the face is described as a white male, 25 to 30 years old, of stocky build with a round face and short, fair, straight hair.

At the time of the offence he was wearing a short-sleeved shirt with a collar which was light in colour and blue denim jeans.

The other attackers are all described as white males of a similar age.

It is not yet known whether the gang used a vehicle, but anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious or may be able to help with enquiries should ring Northwich police on 01606 48000 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
