Steve Conquest, 41, a Manchester City councillor, believes he can follow in Martin Bell's footsteps and cause another upset in Tatton - once regarded as the fifth safest Tory seat in Britain.

"In 1997 the people of Tatton showed they are a thinking electorate and are no longer prepared to vote blindly for the Tories," he said.

"They chose Martin Bell who is the best MP Tatton has ever had and I hope to continue his work in the constituency."

Mr Conquest, of Baguley, Manchester, had sought advice about Tatton from retired veteran Labour councillor Bill Davies, of Glebelands Road, Knutsford.

But he plans to move to the constituency if he wins next year's General Election.

Mr Bell overturned a huge Tory majority to win the 1997 General Election.

"The big thing about this election is the uncertainty and what the people of Tatton will do this time," said Mr Conquest.
