DAVE Evans was a single-stroke winner of the Micro Milling Trophy at Widnes Golf Club on Saturday, the nine handicapper going round the Highfield Road course in 72 for an excellent nett score of 63.

Two players chased him home with nett 64s, Tommy Atkins (75-11=64) claiming second prize ahead of Eric Sparrow (82-18=64) on the basis of a better back nine. Mark Fraser's level par round of 69 off a handicap of three gave him the lowest gross award.

Last weekend was a double header at Widnes with the August Medal following on Sunday. Paul Calland took the honours in that event, producing a splendid gross score of 68 to bring his handicap down from five to six and give him a one-stroke winning margin over Phil McIver, one of the club's top juniors.

Ian Stott was best placed of four players on 65 to take third place, while Mark Fraser's nett 67 was again inside the standard scratch score of 68 to bring his handicap down to 2.5

A busy week at Widnes had begun with the final leg of the Junior Triangular tournament involving promising opposing players from Helsby and Runcorn. The teams compete on a basis of any six from eight scoring in all three legs with the trophy going to the side with the lowest aggregate.

All three teams remained in contention until late in the day, the home team doing their utmost to make up leeway from the first two legs. Aided by Mike Stott's best gross score of 76 a for nett 64 and Phil McIver's lowest nett of 63 off his handicap of 15 they won on the day with a total of 407 but overall honours went to Helsby.

They were just two shots behind Widnes on 409, thanks mainly to James Rowlinson (65) and Gareth Metcalf (66), enabling them to overturn a five-stroke deficit on Runcorn, for whom only David Garner (67) came in with a score lower than 70.
