A NEW support group which offers a lifeline to stroke victims is fighting for survival, the World can exclusively reveal this week.

The Springboard group attracted 70 members just months after it was launched, offering practical help, support, advice and social activities.

But, it is now facing a crisis - because youths are taunting the disabled as they attend club meetings in Upton community centre.

The group is run by volunteers who know exactly what it is like to have a stroke because most of them are sufferers or carers.

They now fear the club could close as some members feel so intimidated.

A minibus provides door-to-door transport but youngsters hanging round the club make them feel nervous.

Springboard secretary Mark Shakeshaft this week appealed for support from the local community.

He said: "There is a great need for this club. The difference it has already made to the lives of so many people is absolutely amazing.

"Just meeting and talking to other stroke victims makes you realise you are not on your own.

"People have found confidence and strength to become much more independent.

"The last thing they want is for kids to be having a go at them."

Mark said Widnes police have been very understanding and supportive, providing extra patrols for their monthly meetings.

Mark, 34, a former special constable, suffered a massive haemorrhage two years ago.

He has astounded specialists by making a remarkable recovery - but has been left 90 per cent blind.

However, he is determined to keep Springboard alive and flourishing.

"People can laugh, relax and enjoy themselves," he said. "We are looking for alternative premises but until we can find something, we are appealing to local kids to be a bit more understanding."

Springboard's next meeting is on Thursday, August 24 from 7pm-9.30pm.

New members are welcome. For further details and to arrange transport, phone Mark Shakeshaft on 0151-510 3180.
