GERMAN cut-price food giant Lidl - one of Europe's largest retailers - has created 200 new jobs.

The company opened a major distribution centre at Manor Park, Runcorn this week.

Adam Clayfield, regional director for Lidl UK, said: "I am pleased to say that we have chosen the site and opened the warehouse with excellent support from the local authorities and the community.

"I am sure that many other companies will see the potential of this area.

"We intend to be an integral part of the Runcorn area for many years to come."

Lidl attributes much of its success to recruiting excellent staff and is extremely pleased with the quality and commitment demonstrated by its new employees.

The company operates more than 4,000 food stores in 11 countries - 250 in the UK.

The Runcorn distribution centre is the latest step in its expansion plans and will distribute goods throughout the north of England and North Wales.

A new Lidl foodstore is to be built soon in Runcorn Old Town.

Lidl sells a limited range of high quality food products at very low prices, plus a varied selection of non-food items ranging from clothes pegs to video recorders.

Cllr Rob Polhill, Halton Council's executive board member for planning, said: "We are proud that the company has chosen to invest in Halton.

"Lidl has identified the recruitment of good staff as being instrumental to its success. I am sure they will continue to find a high quality workforce here."
