MISSED chances proved Alsager's undoing on Saturday as they crashed to defeat in their league opener.

Alsager could have been two up at home to Padiham in the first 15 minutes, but the visitors rode their luck to run out 4-1 winners.

Wayne Brotherton was brought down early on with just the keeper to beat, and a shot from Paul Twigg hit the keeper's legs.

The visitors took the lead on 29 minutes, and made it 2-0 four minutes later.

Padiham went further ahead a minute into the second half, and a player beat three Alsager defenders and rounded the keeper to score the fourth on 67 minutes.

Simpson scored a consolation goal for Alsager eight minutes from the end.
