WINSFORD Sea Cadets were celebrating on Thursday night after their unit was affiliated with HMS Portland.
To be affiliated with a ship is a great honour and many of Winsford's top brass, as well as the ship's Commander Ken Enticknap, turned up for the ceremony.
Eddie Fallows, secretary of the cadets, said: "It was a really good night, everyone enjoyed themselves and the commander was quite impressed.
"We used to be called TS Dee but the unit is changing its name to TS Portland in honour of our affiliation with HMS Portland.
"This gives us a great deal of recognition and if the ship visits the North West, we'll have the chance to go on board."
Navy folklore states that renaming a ship can be bad luck, but Eddie is hoping for their fortunes to improve.
He said: " We are hoping it's going to be good luck because we have had some bad times over the last couple of years so it should get better."
