VILLAGERS at 30 homes were left without electricity -- after a truck brought down a power line leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The 38-tonne articulated lorry hit a store sign, smashed into a parked Landrover Discovery and knocked down an electricity pylon before falling on its side in a nearby field.

Police and firefighters cordoned off Northwich Road, in Antrobus, outside Cassidy Equestrian Supplies, after the accident around noon, on Monday, August 21.

PC Rupert Venables said: "It is difficult to say exactly what caused the accident but there is a possibility that a dog ran into the road or the trailer might have come loose."

An ambulance was called to the scene but a police spokesman said the 21-year-old driver from Wigan suffered only minor injuries.

Manweb workers made the area safe and restored power to six customers but it was estimated that others in the Gibb Hill area had to wait more than six hours for full repairs to be completed.

Sharon Cassidy, of Cassidy Equestrian Supplies, said: "Luckily no one was hurt. My Landrover was crushed and I have lost a day's trade but property is replaceable - lives aren't."
