LANE 'WIGHT' HOT, TOO

STRONG FOR CHAMPIONS

ST. ELPHINS Two were given a taste of life to come when they were swept aside by Lovely Lane Two in Warrington Guardian's Challenge Cup final.

Man of the match Geoff Bourne gave Elphins, the Warrington Public Parks' League's Division Two champions, the perfect start with a 21-9 defeat of D. Braide at Walton Gardens on Sunday.

However, Bourne's teammates were not able to live up to his fine example and Division One team Lovely Lane won nine of the 11 other blocks in a runaway success.

R. Wightman, 21-5, K. Wightman, 21-6 and Chris Welsby and R. Newton, 21-8, made sure of Lane's success.

Lane skipper L. Taylor was given a 21-20 fright by N. Foulkes while the scores were tight early on but wins by J. Oakes, 21-13 and S. Harrison, 21-17, turned out to be mere consolation for Elphins in their 228-168 defeat.

The Supplementary Challenge Cup final was run simultaneously at Walton Gardens with Richmonds defeating King and Queen 204-186.

Dave Searle's 21-8 defeat of L. Roughley in the final block on the green was a pressure win, for which Searle was honoured with the man of the match award.

The highest win of the final came from King and Queen's R. Gregory, 21-4, against Richmonds' late stand-in G. Millins.

Richmonds won seven of the 12 cards in a pretty even affair. King and Queen conceded a 12 handicap start, due to their Challenge Cup success of 1999.
