Stone Dominoes 1

WARRINGTON Town manager Alan Blair was more pleased with his side's second performance of the season despite still failing to pick up any points on Tuesday.

Blair said: "We were unlucky not to get a draw. I can't fault my players for their effort.

"It was a much better performance than on Saturday."

Stone, newly promoted to the division, had an average age of 21 and the oldest player in their team was just 24 but the side from the potteries made it two wins out of two by getting an early goal against Warington and hanging on to their lead.

The first half was niggly and saw few chances between two closely matched teams.

Dave tickle had an early header tipped over by the 'keeper but Warrington lost right back Lee Holden within the first 25 minutes after Dave Pick collided with his ankle. Andy Harris was the replacement.

On 20 minutes Stone captain Lee Lainton got the only goal of the game. From an inswinging corner by Anthony Danalek Lainton got up well to send a powerful header into the roof of the net.

In the 31st minute Pick saw a header at the near post miss by inches and five minutes later Andy Barr glanced a header across the face of the goal.

In the second half it was all Warrington pressure but with no end result.

The ball was set up on the left corner of the box and Neil Morgan sent a curling shot just wide.

Defender Ian McEllan leapt to head down a chance in the six-yard-area but the 'keeper got down quickly to block.

On 65 minutes Kev Tyrell broke free on a counter-attack, carried the ball to the edge of Stone's area and on a one-on-one with the 'keeper he unleashed a strong shot which Stuart Pope did well to parry.

Neil Holden was introduced in place of Morgan and he seemed to inject some pace. But Town suffered from not having people in the right positions to get a final touch on balls played into the box.

A last 10 minute onslaught by Town was thwarted by stubborn and scrambling defence. Ian Callaghan sent good balls into the danger area with regularity and Barr saw three chances go agonisingly close but Town could not get the vital last touch.

Team: Neil McCormack, Ian Callaghan, Steve Cartledge, Ian McEllen, Lee Holden, Andy Tague, Dave Tickle, David Pick, Andy Barr, Kev Tyrell, Neil Morgan. Subs: Neil Holden, Jed Bushell, Andy Harris.

Town travel to Bacup on Saturday with Mike Tandy available again and Robbie Preidt could make a return after twisting his knee.
