A MASSIVE fundraising campaign has been launched by Penketh High School in a bid to build an arts college for its pupils and the wider community.

The state-of-the-art facility for the school's 1,300 pupils would include a new theatre, dance studio, gallery and music practice and performance areas.

Parts of the existing school site would also be renovated to provide recreational and study areas, IT suites and sports facilities.

But the school must first raise £50,000 for the arts college, to be matched with an additional £150,000 from the Department of Education.

Another £400,000 of Government funds would be poured into the school over four years to continue developing the facilities. The school also needs help to raise another £50,000 to develop other departments.

Headteacher Barry Fishwick is appealing to Warrington businesses to make pledges of cash or resources to help make the new building a reality.

In return, the school can offer partnership firms a high-profile community presence and access to facilities.

Mr Fishwick said: "We are a growing and progressive school which is creating a very positive image within the local and business communities.

"We want to be even more effective in providing open access to learning in general and the arts in particular. We want to create opportunities for high quality learning for all, irrespective of background or ability."
